　この第１種滅菌技師は日本医療機器学会により「医療施設内における滅菌器の基本的バリデーションがおこなえる知識と技術とを兼ね備え者に認定を与える」とされており、前段階の「滅菌供給に関わる業務等の実践に通算３年以上携わっていること」が認定条件となる第２種滅菌技士を取得した者のみに受験資格が与えられる。
　滅菌バリデーションの作業を日常業務として行っている製造・産業施設勤務者に対し、この第１種滅菌技師の認定を取得することを最終目標に、第１種滅菌技師及び第２種滅菌技士認定講習会で使用されるテキストや「医療現場における滅菌保証のガイドライン2015」「手術医療の実践ガイドライン（改訂第三版）2019」及び厚労省通知「滅菌バリデーション基準の改正について（薬生監麻発0215第13号）」を活用して、医療現場と製造現場の被滅菌物の違いを交えて「滅菌の基礎」について学んでいく。
