筆者は医療機器企業をコンサルティングしていて、どの企業にも品質に関する意識が薄いことに危惧している。
今回は日経ビジネスデジタル版の記事を抜粋して引用したい。
製造などの現場で働く従業員からの改善提案が激減している。
日本HR協会による改善実績調査の結果によると、1997年度に約114万人から2686万件あった改善提案は、2016年度は約37万人から528万件へと5分の1以下にまで減少した。
もちろん、設計段階での品質が向上し、製造現場における不良品が減少したことで、「改善ネタ」を見つけにくくなっている面はある。
一方で「改善活動はマンネリ化し、発表会で笑いを取るための漫才の練習にばかり精を出すチームも現れたりした」（建機メーカーの工場関係者）。何のための「改善」か。その意識すら乏しい現場があるのも事実だろう。
そんな「品質軽視」の風潮は実際の製品の品質に反映される。かつて世界で「不具合が少ない」と称されてきた日本メーカーのクルマを見れば、その一端がうかがえる。
上図は、米調査会社J.D.パワーが発表する米国における自動車の初期品質調査結果の抜粋だ。
車両購入後90日間での新車の品質を調べるもので、100台当たりの不具合指摘件数として算出される。
米国が最大市場である日本の自動車メーカーが関心を持ち続けてきた指標だ。
17年6月に発表された結果は衝撃的だった。
1位は韓国の起亜自動車。前述の表では省略したが、2位も韓国メーカーで、現代自動車の高級車ブランド「ジェネシス」が入った。
対照的に、日本勢は日産の10位が最高だった。
トヨタ自動車も業界平均を何とか上回る程度で、同社の高級車ブランド「レクサス」は平均値すら下回った。そのレクサスが1位だったのは、わずか6年前のことだ。
「この結果は大問題だ。レクサスの初期品質が平均以下なんてあり得ない。トヨタの品質が落ちたと言われかねない」。あるトヨタの元役員は厳しい表情でこう語る。
レクサスに限らない。17年に下位に沈んだホンダやマツダも11年は2位、5位と上位だった。これを見るだけでも、日本勢の凋落ぶりがうかがえる。
